Visit Kranji: Top 15 Things To Do and Must-See Attractions

You may think that Singapore is just a tiny island with nothing more to offer than modern buildings and stunning gardens, but you're wrong. This island nation is actually an excellent destination for tourists and locals alike, revealing plenty of exciting things to do and discover. In this blog post, Roverista will explore Kranji, a Singaporean district located within the North-western Region, about 22 km from the city center.

History of Kranji

Kranji has served as a military camp during 1942 before the Japanese invasion. During World War II, much of the concentrated combat took place in this area. Now it houses the Kranji War Memorial and Kranji War Cemetery, honoring the 30,000 people who died serving the country.

Kranji is a sprawling rural getaway area within Singapore. Aside from its rich history, it is a place known for its nature reserves, farmlands, farm-to-table restaurants, and wildlife activities. 1) Explore the Natural Beauty of Kranji Marshes Below and Above

Kranji Marshes, located on the northwestern coast of Kranji Reservoir, is considered one of the most extensive freshwater marshes in Singapore. This place holds a rustic feeling of refreshing nature with various natural habitats such as woodlands, marshes, and grass habitats. Because of this, visitors are expected to see a wide array of animal species such as birds (exotic and migratory), monitor lizards, dragonflies, butterflies, and more.

The main highlight of Kranji Marshes is the Raptor Tower which stands at 10 meters. You can climb this tower and take in gorgeous views of the marshlands and their rich flora and fauna from above! You can reach this place from Kranji or Choa Chu Kang MRT stations by taking a taxi to Kranji Marshes. Alternatively, you can also take the SMRT bus 975 from Choa Chu Kang to Opp Neo Tiew Rd Bus Stop, then walk to Kranji Marshes for about 30 minutes.

Are you looking to take a break and maybe catch a beautiful glimpse of the Johor Bahru Straits and skyline? Then head to the serene dwelling of Kranji Reservoir Park. This massive 9-hectare park gives the best hotspot for a picnic or a fun fishing activity.

It’s perfect for a weekend getaway with the family. The park is filled with lush green trees, benches to rest, and pavilions where you can enjoy your picnic while still enjoying nature's beauty around you! There are two fishing grounds nearby if that strikes your fancy as well.

While here, you can pay your tribute at the war memorial plaque, which commemorates all the brave soldiers who have lost their lives during World War II. To get to Kranji Reservoir, you can also take the SMRT bus 975 from Choa Chu Kang then alight at Bus Stop B of Kranji Reservoir Park.

To visit Bistro Gardenasia, the nearest bus stop you can alight to is the Opp Nyee Phoe Group bus stop from Kranji MRT Station. From there, the bistro is nearby with just a 2-minute walk.

4) Learn about War History and Battle at the Kranji Beach Battle Site

Drop by the Kranji Beach Battle Site and learn about the darkest Singapore war history and battle. The battle site was the defense site of Northwestern Singapore during World War II against the Japanese invaders.

This is where a gruesome struggle took place when the Japanese crossed the Johor Straits to infiltrate. The Australian Brigade and Singaporean volunteers released petrol from a local depot in the waters to counter their advancement. They set this alight, in turn blazing everyone and causing casualties to the Japanese invading forces. But due to miscommunication, the Australian brigade withdrew their troops which eventually led to the Japanese gaining a position from Kranji to Causeway.

You can reach the Kranji Beach Battle Site by taking the bus to Kranji Way - Opp Pub Quarter (49219) and Kranji Way - Kranji Reservoir Pk B (49199). From these bus stops, the site is only a 4-minute walk away.

5) Feed the Cutest Little Goats at Hay Dairies

It is a fun destination for those who love goats and all things dairy; at Hay Dairies, you can feed the cutest little creatures ever as they wait patiently in their pen! With only $5 per packet of alfalfa hay, there's no better way than experiencing this enjoyable feeding activity while spending some time on Singapore’s only goat farm.

During the morning hours of 9 AM - 10:30 AM, you can watch goats go about getting milked. And if your taste buds crave some fresh (and preservative-free) goat milk, then these guys have got it going on-- original or chocolate-flavored. A fresh goat’s milk is guaranteed perfect to finish the day at Hay Dairies! An easy way to reach the farm is taking Bus 975 in Choa Chu Kang. You can get off at Opp Lim Chu Kang Lane 4 Bus Stop then walk for 5 minutes to reach Hay Dairies.

6) Meet the Frogs at Jurong Frog Farm

Another fun activity to do in Kranji is going to the Jurong Frog Farm. Established in the 1970s, the farm started breeding American Bullfrogs for commercial purposes. Although located in Kranji, Jurong Frog Farm was initially situated in Jurong before moving to its new location. Now, tourists and children can feed these avid eaters at the Feeding Frenzy Section of Jurong Frog Farm. Wear those boots and get ready to catch tadpoles or frogs in a “Catch-A-Tadpole” Activity if you are looking for something more active and fun, like an adventure!

For an immersive experience showing how they live their lives from birth until adulthood, hop on Gabbe's Family Tour program guided by a real scientist - the Frogologist. An easy way to reach the farm is taking Bus 975 in Choa Chu Kang. You can get off at Opp Lim Chu Kang Lane 5 Bus Stop then walk for 12 minutes to reach Jurong Frog Farm.

7) Get your Hands Dirty at Kok Fah Technology Farm

Step into a world of fresh produce and farm life at Kok Fah Technology Farm. This local family-owned business has been around for four decades. It offers tours perfect for traveling tourists or locals looking to get their hands dirty with gardening trends in Singapore! Get your fill on a fun-filled guided tour that will show you how Hydroponics works.

You can also get some add-on activities such as potting succulents and microgreens - all depending on what suits YOU best! A Weekend Market is being held where you can get your hands on some freshly harvested goods such as leafy vegetables and salad greens. To get to Kok Fah Technology Farm from Choa Chu Kang MRT Station, take Bus 975 or 172, then alight at Chentai Nursery. From there, you will have to walk for 20-30 minutes to reach KFTF.

8) Pay your Respects at Kranji War Memorial

Stand before the gravestones, pay respects and honor the brave souls who died in the line of duty during World War II. This war memorial is a hillside cemetery that gives a serene haven with more than 4,400 white gravestones that perfectly line up on the healthy green gentle slopes. The memorial consists of 3 areas: Kranji Military Cemetery, Kranji War Cemetery, and State Cemetery. You can ascend to the flight of stairs and reach the hilltop, where you’ll see four memorials. The Singapore Memorial is the largest, with a height of 24 meters, and has a massive star-topped central pylon. An easy way to reach the memorial is taking the SMRT buses 160 or 170 from Kranji MRT Station. From there, it is only two stops away.

9) Delight in Halal Food at Kranji Countryside

Thai food is a blissful experience you should not miss out on. Delight in delectable and hearty Thai Halal food at 555 Halal Thai, located at Gallop Kranji Farm Resort. This 500-seater restaurant serves up some of Singapore's finest halal prepared cuisines with a serene background that is just as tranquil to enjoy! Diners can order communal meals such as mookata (a clay pot filled with meats), grilled seafood, or steamboat, amongst other options, all from one location.

Aside from these menu offerings, check out some of the food carts you can find, such as Sa-Tay, Burger Joi, and Apam Balik Power. To get here, take the SMRT Bus 975 and alight at Opp Neo Tiew Road bus stop. Follow Neo Tiew Lane 2 and walk for 30 minutes to reach Gallop Kranji Farm Resort.

10) Get Closer to Nature with Kranji Forest Hiking

Kranji Forest is one of the most popular hiking trails in Singapore. If you want to get away from it all and enjoy nature, then this is your spot! The Kranji Green Corridor or Rail Corridors takes hikers through a continuous stretch where they can see both lush greenery and wildlife. There’s so much variety at Kranji Forest: bright flowers alongside towering trees on either side; birds singing their hearts out amongst elegant branches.

At Kranji Forest, there used to be a Malaysian KTM train line in the area that ran from Tanjong Pagar Rail Station from the south of Singapore to the Malaysian border in the north.
